Tips for Successful Solo Travel

Traveling alone can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. It can also be intimidating, especially if it is your first solo trip.

Angela shared our tips for successful solo travel on ABC TV’s The Daily Refresh. Watch the segment, then read on for more recommendations.

When you’re planning a solo trip, take the following into consideration during the planning process and while you’re traveling:

  • Focus on your why. What do you want to get out of the trip?
  • Consider social opportunities. Even solo travelers enjoy interacting with others!
    • Look for group tours and classes where you can meet fellow travelers.
    • Local cafes and bars can be great places to meet locals.
  • Record your experiences. Take photos and videos and consider keeping a journal or sketchbookso you can relive the adventure afterward.
  • Follow basic safety precautions.
    • Always share your itinerary with someone and check in with them periodically.
    • Take advantage of your phone’s tracking features so others can find you in an emergency.
    • Don’t wear flashy jewelry or display other expensive items that could make you a target for theft.
    • Divide your cash and keep it in different places.
    • Keep your phone charged.
    • Use Uber and Lyft rather than cabs so you have a record of your driver and route.
    • Download a language app like Google Translate so you can communicate with locals for directions or other assistance.
    • Keep your wits about you — don’t drink too much, and follow your instincts.
