Around the World in Review, Leg 11: Singapore, Cambodia, and Sumatra

This leg of the trip was predicated on a denied visa to Vietnam. We still aren’t sure why our visa was denied, but it probably had something to do with the number of countries we had visited in the previous year.

The airline allowed us to fly the first leg of our trip, but refused to issue the second ticket onward to Hanoi, Vietnam. So, we spent an extra couple of days in Singapore and made the most of it, trying to reroute so we could still experience a portion of continental southeast Asia.

We booked an affordable flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, and found that, sometimes, unfortunate circumstances can be parleyed into very fortunate adventures.

As it turns out, Siem Reap and the entire complex of Angkor Wat were well worth an extended stay. And, although we very much intend to visit Vietnam in the future, we really didn’t mind foregoing it for this trip.

From Cambodia, we made a quick overnight stop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before continuing on to a week of rest in Medan, Indonesia. While we fully intended to explore the coast of Sumatra during this stop, the trip fatigue dictated otherwise. We booked an extravagant room in the best hotel and spent the days sleeping, eating, and occasionally writing by the pool.

Sometimes, you just have to relax…
